Making women beautiful has never been work. It’s fun, interesting, and totally engaging. I feel I really haven’t worked a day in my life. I make people beautiful, because I was blessed with the ability to understand hair styling concepts beginning in beauty school. It is one of the reasons I was put on the planet.
Michael Ferrell is a master hair designer and colorist, well-respected in the hair industry. He’s traveled extensively across the United States as an educator, platform artist, and beauty school instructor, teaching Wella products, cuts and color to Hairdressers. For years he was one of the headliners on stage at the Northwest Women’s Show (featuring Image Products), doing cutting and styling demonstrations, with several appearances on AM Northwest of KATU-TV, one appearance, the models were brought in studio a week early then when on the air live the next week. Titled “Fabulous over Fifty!”
Michael has owned a number of studios in the Portland, Oregon, area. They include Michael’s on Main in Tigard specializing in spiral perms, cuts, and color for over 10 years; Pumpkin Ridge Hair Design in North Plains, a large commissioned salon with five employees; Salon Zen Do in St. John’s focused exclusively on hair color with Dickson Italian hair colors; Beach Blonde Salon in Season, Oregon, where he helped launch Farmavita Italian Color lines in Oregon; and Salon Zen-Do in St. Johns. Today, his premiere color salon, Salon Borealis, is in North Portland in the St. John’s community, the culmination of decades of hair salon design and quality professional hair style and color.
Hair color is the evolution of the manuscript of nature, underlined by mystery. I meditate every morning, discovering things such as Love, Harmony and Beauty, simple and yet the most powerful things needed for life. I rejoice in finding God in the face of an iris, Elegance, in the curve of a leaf.
The ability of hair color and hair shaping to transform beings fascinates me. Hair, and hair color, is the frame around the face, enhancing the picture it surrounds, accenting skin tones, eyes, and lip colors. It is the coolest thing to dramatically change someone’s appearance within hours of meeting them. My clients put an incredible amount of trust and honoring in me and my ability, so I’d better able to deliver. You can talk about how fabulous you are during a consultation, but guess what…the mirror doesn’t lie. You will feel confident in my abilities and concepts before we begin your service. I guarantee it!
I use a very expensive and exclusive color line from Italy, Farmavita Color. Few salons in the United States take advantage of this amazing color line. Farmavita uses the best color pigment that allows my color clients to continue to look good months after leaving the Salon, while being able to use very low levels of developer for silver coverage and be less damaging to the hair.
I love silver hair. It’s not just about covering silver, but enhancing it. Sometimes adding white or platinum highlights to natural silver is stunning, adding brightness instead of allowing dullness in the natural color, it’s as if someone flicked on a light switch on the face.
It is about the art, it’s about our dreams. It’s about loving and respecting ourselves. In today’s world, people are perceived too often by their outside physical appearance. Allow my vision of you, with your vision of you, to create a unique and beautiful “new you.”
Since entering hair design school in 1972, Michael’s been on a quest to master and remaster hair design and color, as it constantly morphs. Making treks to Paris and Amsterdam to see how hair design and salons differ abroad, working for years in Hawaii, moving to Florida, and returning to Portland to live and work where he grew up.
Ferrell was a makeup artist for Yosh Salon at the San Francisco International Salon at the Red Lion working on top models during backstage modeling events. He worked for several years at the Bellevue International Hair Shows in Seattle, and the Shades of Fall Portland Salon Hair Show at the Red Lion Hair Janzen Beach before being picked up to work for Wella and Berliners Beauty Supply. Michael taught hair design and color at Phagan’s School of Hair Design, owned by hair design award winner Alan Moore, and Beau Monde Beauty School, in Portland, Oregon.
He also volunteered at the Clatsop County Women’s Resource Center with hair and makeup services, and is a hospice volunteer for Providence Hopewell house and Serenity hospice. One of Michael’s passions is gardens. He became a Master Gardner a few years ago. He uses the same passion for hair color and design in his gardens.
Designing a garden is much like designing a hair style. You have to understand the science as well as the artistry to create beauty in nature.

The following are quotes from newspaper coverage about Michael Ferris and his salons.
“I can make someone pretty and help give her the confidence to go to that job interview or make that life change,” Ferrell explains. That said, he’s done things like free makeovers and beauty consulting for women referred by the Women’s Resource Center.
…Right now, his focus is on hair, on bringing out your “outer fabulosity” as he might term it. Only time will tell how Michael Ferrell’s life will play out, though, given his myriad interests, boundless energy and big, big heart.
“Let There Be Beauty!,” Hip Fish Monthly of the Lower Columbia Pacific Region
Ferrell prefers women clients ages 30 to 80. “They know how dangerous it is to get a bad color and cut,” he said. “I don’t do a lot of young kids, because they’re not appreciative — they’re already gorgeous.”
“I will never retire,” he added, “I will cut hair as long as I am able to lift my hands to my shoulders. Doing hair is not work. Making people pretty? How hard is that?”
